    In this episode, Clay speaks with James Casey. James is a 7-year NFL veteran, spending time with the Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles, and Denver Broncos. Currently, he is the tight ends coach for the Cincinnati Bengals.

    Drafted by the Chicago White Sox out of high school, James spend 4 years in professional baseball before returning to school to pursue his education and football dreams. He earned All-American honors at Rice University before being drafted into the NFL.

    James and Clay walk through James’ unique journey from humble beginnings in small town Texas to the NFL. The two discuss James’ introvert personality, the tragic loss of James’ mother at 16 years old, asking for help, perseverance, professional baseball and failure, finding his way to Rice, what James does better than anyone else, and what James is most proud of in his life.

    In this episode, Clay speaks with Christina Olufunmike Tegbe and Crystal Oluwamayowa Tegbe. Christina is the founder and CEO of 54 Thrones and Crystal is the company’s Chief of Staff.

    In this episode, Clay speaks with Matt Flaherty. Matt is a professional ultramarathoner (50 – 100-mile races). He is a past ultra-champion and placed second in the 2021 Leadville 100.

    Matt is also a city council member in Bloomfield, Indiana, writer, musician, and environmentalist.

    Matt and Clay walk through Matt’s journey into professional ultramarathoning, his decision to leave professional running to return to school in his 30’s, managing diverse interest, running to your strengths, unreasonable belief in yourself, staying positive over 100 miles, pain and suffering, and making an impact outside of running.

  • EP 38 - Dr. Gwen Bradford

    In this episode, Clay speaks with Dr. Gwen Bradford. Gwen is an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Director of Graduate Studies at Rice University. She works in value theory and normative ethics, focusing on achievement, meaning, uniqueness, perfectionism, well-being, and ill-being.

    Gwen’s book, Achievement (OUP 2015), which is about the nature and value of achievement, was awarded the 2017 APA Book Prize.

    Gwen and Clay focus mainly on Achievement, and how achievement relates to meaning in life. In addition, they discuss the goal of being human according to Aristotle, the ‘Golden Mean’, Plato’s view of leadership, the philosopher’s role in society, difficulty, evil achievements, and why it’s important to engage in conversations that make us uncomfortable.

  • EP 37 - Danny Southwick

    In this episode, Clay speaks with Danny Southwick. Danny is a psychologist and doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania. Where he is studying under, and publishing work with, Dr. Angela Duckworth, the wildly influential psychologist and author of the best-seller, Grit. Danny’s research focuses on practice, expertise, grit, and perceptions of talent.

    Danny is also an accomplished athlete. He has quarterbacked teams in the Arena Football League for over 14 years, and spent time early in his career with the NFL’s Oakland Raiders.

    Danny walks listeners through an athletic journey that included 6 college transfers, 21 different professional football teams and finding a passion for psychology.   • EP 36 - Bobby Bramhall & Nate Headley

    In this episode, Clay speaks with Bobby Bramhall and Nate Headley. Bobby and Nate are the co-authors of Who’s on First? Everything a Baseball Parent Needs to Know. Who’s on First? is a ‘how-to’ manual designed to help young athletes and their parents navigate the baseball journey from tee-ball to pro-ball.

    Bobby Bramhall is the President and Co-Founder of the Athlete Licensing Company, a former NCAA Division I Assistant Athletics Director, former professional baseball player, and All-American at Rice University.

    Nate Headley is the Owner and Operator of RBI Baseball & Softball in Knoxville, TN, a former collegiate athlete, former NCAA Division I Baseball Coach at the University of Tennessee and Director of Baseball Operations.

    Bobby, Nate, and Clay discuss the book at length. In addition, they share why they fell in love with baseball, their favorite baseball memories, focusing on what you can control, natural ability, specialization at a young age, small pond theory, great coaching, mentality, and the realities of the minor leagues.

  • EP 35 - Dr. Mikki Hebl

    In this episode, Clay speaks with Rice University’s Martha and Henry Malcolm Lovett Professor of Psychology, Dr. Mikki Hebl..

    Mikki is an applied psychologist whose research focuses on workplace discrimination and the ways both individuals and organizations can remediate such discrimination and successfully manage diversity. She has published approximately 200 journal articles, book chapters, and edited books. She has presented her research across the globe and often shares her expertise on subtle biases, gender issues, and ally training within organizations.

    Mikki has been the recipient of 23 major teaching and mentoring awards (including the prestigious Cherry Award), research grants from NSF and NIH, and several gender-related research awards. She has joined an elite few at Rice University who have been retired from winning further awards. In 2005, she was selected as the Commencement Speaker at Rice University’s graduation ceremonies, which marked the first and only time a current faculty member gave the address.

    Mikki is also a life-long runner, completing 74 marathons, including 1 in every state and 1 on every continent.

    Mikki and Clay exchange definitions of self-actualization, explore the pursuit of extremely difficult goals and challenging ourselves (including running a marathon in Antarctica), impacting and influencing others, finding progress in challenging spaces, partisan professors and their social media habits, Mikki’s ‘anti-vita’, and what Mikki is most proud of in her career.

  • EP 34 - Caroline Burckle

    In this episode, Clay speaks with Caroline Burckle. Caroline was a two-time National Champion, multiple-time All-American, and 2008 NCAA Swimmer of the Year at the University of Florida. She represented the United States in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, winning a bronze medal in the 4x200 meter freestyle relay. Caroline is also the co-founder of RISE Athletes, a virtual mentoring program where professional and Olympic athletes mentor and empower youth athletes with transferable skills to impact sport and life performance.

    In this episode, Clay speaks with Victoria Stambaugh. Victoria is an Olympic Taekwondo athlete who represented Puerto Rico in the 2021 Tokyo Olympic games.

    Victoria describes her nonlinear journey through 6 knee surgeries, falling short for the Rio and London games, and finally finishing her race to becoming an Olympian in Tokyo. Victoria and Clay discuss what it means to have a ‘strong mind’, the power of being different, her relationship with fear, the difference between quitting vs. moving on, changing perspectives, focusing on effort, and the importance of sharing your story honestly.

  • EP 31 - Desmond Blair

    In this episode, Clay speaks with Desmond Blair. Desmond is an artist, adaptive athlete, and mentor to individuals, young and old, with limb differences. Desmond was born without hands to a single mother in the projects of east Dallas, yet he has gone on to become an exceptionally talented painter known across the United States.

    Desmond shares his story of perseverance and positivity. He covers the physical, mental, and social challenges he faced growing up without hands, how his limb difference led him to art, why he refuses to use the word ‘disabled’, the powerful figure that was his mother and why she was so influential, losing his mother pre-maturely, his definition of perseverance, and what it means be a Master of the Soul.

  • EP 30 - Dr. Michael Sierra-Arévalo

    In this episode, Clay speaks with Dr. Michael Sierra-Arevalo. Michael is a sociologist, criminologist, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin. He is an expert on police, gangs, guns, and violence prevention and serves on the City of Austin’s Public Safety Commission.

    His research shows how danger and violence influence police culture, officer practice, and social inequality. His first book, The Danger Imperative: Violence, Death, and the Soul of Policing, is under advance contract at Columbia University Press. Michael’s writing and research have appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Times Higher Education, NPR, Vox, GQ, and The New Republic.

    Michael and Clay explore “The Danger Imperative”- a term Michael uses to describe how police are informally and formally socialized into a cultural frame that emphasizes violence and the need for officer safety—and its effect on officer behavior. They discuss culture and its importance, the complexity and difficulty of policing, where the Danger Imperative and cognitive distortions in all humans overlap, base rates and probabilities, translating data into OpEd’s and talking points, the citizen’s role in police interaction, and solutions to bridge the divide.

  • EP 29 - Dr. Anne Shadle

    In this episode, Clay speaks with Dr. Anne Shadle. Anne is the Director of Mental Performance for the New York Jets and a certified mental performance consultant at Shadle Performance Institute where she has worked with USA Track & Field, USA Baseball, and the International Amateur Athletic Federation. She was also a former professional runner and 2x NCAA National Champion at the University of Nebraska in the indoor mile and outdoor 1500 meters.

    Anne and Clay discuss her role with the NY Jets, the importance of self-awareness, perfectionism and comparison, the space between worthy pursuits, contentment, changing behavior, and finding balance.

  • EP 28 - JP Abrecrumbie

    In this episode, Clay speaks with JP Abercrumbie. JP is the Executive Associate Athletics Director for Culture & Engagement at the University of Notre Dame, where she is responsible for leading the diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts for Notre Dame Athletics.

    JP and Clay discuss all things diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Including the importance of understanding and authenticity, why her role exists, what DEI looks like at ground level, and how success is measured. They also explore whether universities are trading excellence for opportunity or altering standards. Walk through the importance of discourse and how to handle disagreements. And finally collect JP’s perspective on activism on campus, BLM, George Floyd and the summer of 2020, compelled behavior, creating environments where progress is possible, and the difference between hearing and listening.

  • EP 27 - Bobby Tudor

    In this episode, Clay speaks with Bobby Tudor. Bobby is a Retired Partner at Perella Weinberg Partners, the founder and former Chairman of Tudor, Pickering, Holt & Co, a philanthropist, and dedicated husband and father. Bobby is widely recognized as a leader in the Energy advisory and investment banking business, playing a key role in the shale revolution in the United States. Bobby has recently turned his attention to energy’s transition towards sustainable solutions and the reduction of carbon emissions.

    Bobby is the Immediate Past Chair of the Greater Houston Partnership and Rice University Board of Trustees. He serves on the Board of Advisors for Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, the Collaborative for Children, the Carbon Neutral Coalition, and the Tulane Center for Energy Law. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the National Petroleum Council, the Houston Symphony, Good Reason Houston, and the MD Anderson Board of Visitors.

  • EP 26 - John Edward Heath

    In this episode, Clay speaks with John Edward Heath. John is a veteran of the United States Marines, an amputee, adaptive athlete, Paralympic hopeful, mental health advocate, and motivational speaker.

    John takes listeners through some of the most difficult moments along his journey including his biological mother struggling with addiction as he moved in and out of foster care, sexual abuse, anger and resentment, drugs, gangs, public outing as a gay man, losing friends and loved ones to suicide, and the decision to amputate his leg. John and Clay also explore how adversity serves him today, the importance of influential voices, the power of belief, and gratefulness as John explains how he used all of his experiences to find his true purpose of helping and healing others.

  • EP 20 - Kenny Thompson, Jr.

  • EP 19 - Dr. Danielle King

    In this episode, Clay speaks with Dr. Danielle King. Dr. King is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Rice University. She focuses the majority of her professional time on the study of RESILIENCE. Her work has been funded by the National Science Foundation and published in both book chapters and scientific articles. She received her B.A. in Psychology from Spelman College and her M.A. and Ph.D. in IO Psychology from Michigan State University.

  • EP 14 - David Vobora

    In this episode, Clay speaks with David Vobora. David is a former St. Louis Ram and Seattle Seahawk linebacker who founded The Adaptive Training Foundation. ATF is a 501c3 that provides access and inclusion to individuals living with physical or traumatic impairments by empowering them through exercise and community.
